Esther read law at Oxford University and completed the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law in London. After being called to the English Bar she was admitted in Hong Kong. She has practised in both Hong Kong and England & Wales.
Esther’s practice, both as an advocate and in the advisory sphere, encompasses a wide spectrum of civil and commercial law: contract, personal injury, insurance, wills, probate, property, family and matrimonial, as well as company and insolvency. In terms of regulatory law, she has extensive experience with investigations under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing (Financial Institutions) Ordinance. Esther also has experiences in public law, judicial review and discrimination law.
In England, she practised for a number of years as a member of the Commercial and Chancery Group at Exchange Chambers, a leading set in Northern England, during which she had a busy practice appearing in court on a daily basis. She has been involved in cases at the English Court of Appeal and appeared regularly at the High Court and county courts. In Hong Kong, Esther has appeared as counsel up to the Court of Final Appeal and the Court of Appeal. She has advised and/or acted for a number of banks, building societies and charities in the UK and Hong Kong, as well as the (then) Equal Opportunities Commission and local authorities in England and Wales. She has also been involved in contractual disputes concerning English Premier League footballers, as well as international and cross border matters, such as trading disputes between UK and Hong Kong based companies.
Esther grew up in Hong Kong in a Putonghua speaking family, before pursuing her studies in the USA (Philips Exeter Academy and UC Berkeley) and thereafter in the UK. She is fluent in English, Cantonese and Putonghua (written and spoken).
